About Borrowed Schutzhund

“If to borrow is to take…”

Hey there! I’m Kate Discher, an artist and schutzhund enthusiast. I started drawing the same way everyone starts - my teacher gave me a crayon and told me to draw the sun, and I just never stopped. I was always drawing cartoons in the margins of my school notes and eventually I started drawing mostly dogs.

I’ve always loved animals so it was natural that these two interests would intersect. Now, I love drawing other people’s dogs and especially trying to portray the unbreakable bonds they share with their handlers. I hope that’s the main thing people take away when they see my art - how important the relationships between people and their dogs are.

The name Borrowed Schutzhund comes from one of my favorite bands, Fleet Foxes. They sing two songs that have impacted how view life tremendously, “Beaudoin Dress” and “Sunblind.” Beaudoin Dress is a song about debt and how much we take from the ones we love in pursuit of our passions. On the other hand, the song Sunblind is about paying homage to the work of those who came before us, borrowing from them to make something new.

Borrowed Schutzhund is about those two things for me: remembering all that’s been afforded to me through love and luck, and honoring those who came before me in art and sport.
